About Us
The Great Start Foundation was founded by Jennifer Shepherd in August 2017. Jennifer is a proud graduate of Wayne State University, where she earned her B.S. in Psychology, and she is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Social Work at Walden University. Today, she serves as the Executive Director and Program Coordinator for the Great Start Maternal Infant Health Program.
Jennifer’s journey has been one of resilience and determination. At just 19 years old, she became a mother to her daughter. During that time, she faced overwhelming challenges—surviving domestic violence, relying on government assistance, and even experiencing homelessness while caring for her 2-year-old child. With the support and guidance of the Maternal Infant Health Program, Jennifer found hope and resources that helped her rebuild her life.
Today, Jennifer is the proud mother of two beautiful children. Her experiences have shaped her into the compassionate and driven leader she is today. She deeply understands the struggles that many women and families face every day. Her humility and gratitude fuel her mission to empower others, offering support and guidance to those navigating their own difficult journeys. She is committed to making a difference—one family at a time.
